Il ne faisait aucun doute qu'une intervention sans précédent des gouvernements et des banques centrales du monde entier aurait un certain effet. Aujourd'hui, plus d'un an et demi après les premières mesures fiscales et monétaires, le pire semble avoir été évité. Malgré des confinements sévères et l'arrêt temporaire de l'économie mondiale, nous avons été épargnés des plus grands risques systémiques.
L'économie mondiale devrait croître de plus de 5% en 2021. Malgré les pressions diverses qui s’exercent sur la chaîne d'approvisionnement, une croissance mondiale supérieure à la tendance à long terme est également attendue au cours des deux prochaines années.
En ce qui concerne l'inflation, les banquiers centraux devront sans doute progressivement ajuster leur visée. Alors que certains facteurs devraient contribuer à une accélération temporaire des hausses de prix, l'inflation semble être plus persistante dans la zone euro et aux États-Unis que ne l'avaient anticipé les banques centrales.
Les inquiétudes quant à la réalisation des objectifs de croissance à plus long terme, liées aux forces exercées sur les banques centrales pour protéger l'économie d'une surchauffe, contribuent à l'aplatissement des courbes de rendement. Ce mouvement est particulièrement perceptible aux États-Unis, où Jerome Powell devrait augmenter le taux directeur de trois fois 25 points de base l'année prochaine. La BCE semble un peu en retard et même si elle devrait atteindre son objectif de 2% de hausse des prix à moyen terme, nous ne nous attendons pas à ce que Christine Lagarde modifie le taux directeur avant 2023. En poursuivant sa politique monétaire accommodante via APP après l'extinction du PEPP en mars 2022, la BCE devrait pouvoir continuer à garantir des conditions de financement favorables.
Jerome Powell conservera le contrôle de la Fed pendant quatre ans supplémentaires. Pour le gouverneur qui a guidé la banque centrale à travers la crise corona, la voie semble désormais ouverte pour mettre en œuvre la hausse des taux d'intérêt susmentionnée. Certaines réticences pourraient venir du marché du travail. Malgré le nombre record de postes vacants aux États-Unis et la baisse du chômage, le taux d'emploi reste inférieur de plus de 2% à celui d'avant la crise corona.
